My son Luke is in year 3 and at the moment is learning about the 50s and 60s. His teacher has asked if we have anything in the house relating to that period that we allow Luke to bring to class but with my wife and I being children of the 70s and 80s I thought I was stuck. That was until I remembered about my annual collection!
So I went into our roofspace and found my huge cardboard box of annuals which I fondly collected as a child. Every year Santa used to bring me the Beano, Dandy and Eagle albums but I had a real thing for comics in general and used to love hunting around charity shops for any old annuals which captured my imagination.
One of the first ones I came across was a 1977 Hotspur, featuring on the cover none other than the ultra cool looking King Cobra. I only have a few of these albums so not sure if I inherited them from one of my older brothers. Next find was my 1969 Wham! album, not the pop group but the brilliant comic which ran from 1964 to 1968 when it merged with Pow!
Other classics I came across were my Biggles album, The Bimbo, the Funky Phantom featuring Motormouse and Autocat (have no recollection of this AT ALL!), Whizzer and Chips, Smash, Look In and the pièce de résistance my 1977 Six Million Dollar Man annual!
I almost forgot to add, the album I chose for my son was my 1968 Beano. I’m fairly sure I have older than this thanks to some Oxfam shop but nonetheless, it looks great (and smells nostalgic!) for a 40 year old kids book.
