4o dear

Some time ago when Channel 4 launched their tv and film on demand service, 4od, I installed the application, had a look at what was on offer but never actually watched anything.

I don’t watch an awful lot of Channel 4 in my spare time but then last week I missed the new series Dirty Sexy Money and as the repeats were on late I thought it was time to put 4od to use.

Upon launching 4od the program told me it needed to upgrade and that’s where I ran into a whole host of problems!

Firstly I received a error abour registering Flash:

“Error 1904.Module C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9.ocx failed to register“.

When I Googled this I found thousands of results where other people were experiencing the same problem and like myself, were unable to find an immediate solution. I read various pieces of advice such as deleting the offending .ocx file (which was a lengthy challenge in itself) and using the standalone installer for Flash. However, when I tried to reinstall I still had the same problem.

Then I found a link to uninstall the Flash player – http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157. Once I ran this and uninstalled Flash, 4od successfully installed, installing Flash 9 for me.

I thought brilliant, that’s problem solved but of course that wasn’t the end of my woes as when I clicked on the shortcut to launch 4od nothing happened! Again a Google search turned up many similiar problems and eventually I found a solution…

It seems that I needed to firstly uninstall Kontiki, which runs 4od. So I downloaded and application called kclean.exe from http://www.omn.org/support/Troubleshooting/support0705.shtml. When I ran the application it told me that iplayer live used Kontiki but I proceeded anyway and it successfully uninstalled. Once it finished I uninstalled 4od, then reinstalled 4od and hey presto, 4od worked!

I can’t help wonder if there’s some sort of conflict with the BBC iplayer and 4od. Since successfully viewing a show from 4od I’ve been able to do the same on the BBC iplayer, fingers crossed that’s the end of my 4od hell. Hopefully this article will help others that’s had similiar problems.

Has this helped you? Please let me know!

Just wanted to say thankyou so much for this information. I have been struggling back and forth with 4oD tech support for 4 months to try and sort out exactly this problem. Using your guidelines it has been fixed in 4 minutes!!!!
    Awesome

Glad to be of help Rachel, I hope 40d take note and change their guidance as I’ve seen many many people posting the same problem!

OMG!!!! You have just saved me from somuch frustration. Thank you so much. I have been trying to install this annoying but useful program for months and countless emails to the so called “technitions” have done nothing. I have finally downloaded $oD thanks to your brilliance. You could deffinatly teach those at channel 4 a lesson or 2!!!

I love you so much right now.

I have been pulling my hair out about this. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of computer jargon and error messages. I swear I hear the error message noise in my sleep now.

Well… maybe I’m exagerating, but you helped me so much. I’m so happy! I can finnaly watch 4od again.

    Hi Darren,

unfortunately it didn’t work for me – when I ran kclean I got an error message saying that part of flash9 failed to unregister (error 1905) and then when I tried to reinstall 4OD I got the same old error 1904.

If you have any other suggestions they would be greatly appreciated!

    Txx

kitten did you uninstall Flash first? If not try that, you really need to clean it off your system, run the kclean.exe then let the 4od installer install Flash for you.

I get error 1904 when I install 4oD into Vista HP on my SR5228UK but find 4oD works if I OK the error. But then I have two pairs of Flash9 files; existing Flash9fs and Flash9ds put there by 4oD. If I reinstall Flash from Adobe’s website, only the 9fs are there as this removes the uninstall file.
But what about registering? 4oD help says register Flash9e.ocx which, of course, fails as it is not there! Should the 9d or 9f be registered? I can register the 9d manually.
After messing about, my Delivery Manager Service stopped working quite often so I used System Restore to start again and installed only 4oD. Now the DMS only stops on shut down! It didn’t used to do this on a Vista almost clean apart from 100 updates.

Thanks so much I was experiencing the same problems until I stumbled across your excellent fix.

    Many many thanks

    Three PSs
After further tests, I find my DMS stops on Sleep, Restart and Shut Down and only uninstalling 4oD prevents this.
I have reported these faults to 4oD Help and they say they are working on this beta version.
And the link is to an Adobe file with links for uninstalling and reinstalling Flash that yield a larger Flash folder than that with 4oDs links. http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_19166&sliceId=2

hi thanks for your help any way the second link does not work any more for kclean so you can use this

    http://static.sky.com/kclean/KClean.exe

  16. Darren (January 26, 2009, 6:50 pm).

Just a quick note to anyone looking for the KClean.exe to be careful downloading any links in the comments here as I haven’t checked them for viruses etc.

  17. George CA Talbot (February 9, 2009, 7:52 pm).

In October 2008, Vinton Bacon (vbacon@kontiki.com) emailed me 500 words of info on KClean with a link that downloads it: http://demo.kontiki.com/support/KClean.exe.
I used it to check 4oD was the only program that used the Kontiki programs but assume it would have Cleaned.

Ever since I installed 4oD, Windows Problem Reports and Solutions has reported Device Manager Stops Working almost every Shut Down or Restart; not Sleep as I stated above.
Windows has just sent me a link for a patch that installs versions 5.17.808.70, 2 JAN 09, of KHost and KService that do not do this. I run Vista HP and don’t know if the patch would work with other operating systems. The links is: http://kdx.kontiki.com/patch517/KDMEngineUpdate_5.17.exe.
I set a restore point and note it does not. While installing, it reported system error 1067 occurred and the process terminated unexpectedly. But it concluded with the KService service was started successfully. Two more Problem Reports were logged while installing but none since.
Both BBC and C4 downloads appear OK.

It cant be BBC iPlayer, as i have same problem and i dont have it installed…
Though at the moment i am using RegCure, apparently thats what helpped my freinds.

i tried what you said and i even uninstalled flash before using the kclean.exe to no avail. do you know of anything else i can do to make it work :(
    many thanks

Are the last two posts referring to error 1904 on installing 4oD?
If so, click OK. It should complete and run OK. C4′s FAQs for error 1904 does now advise this!
I suppose 4oD has tried to install a version of Flash lower than that already in and finds this prohibited so creates the error. OKing allows the installation to run with the higher version.

I tried to explain this back in August but the latest program is now Flash10b v 10.0.22.87.
If you have only a Flash10 and try to install 4oD and it installs a Flash9, I guess this will not create an error and 4oD will use the Flash10. But I have not installed 4oD recently.

You are an absolute legend. I have spent hours trying to fix it with peoples long suggestions with the registry etc. Then i stumbled on this. Simple and effective.

    THANKYOU!
